The San Francisco Bay Area has launched its 802.11-based wireless HotSpot broadband access network. The network currently consists of over 40 locations, or hotspots, where subscribers with Wi-Fi-enabled laptops and PDAs can tap into the data stream. On December 23, 2005 the City of San Francisco issued a request for proposals (RFP) to build a citywide Wi-Fi network to provide free or low cost Internet access. N etwork providers now have the specifications of the network so they can submit plans for meeting those guidelines and contributing to San Francisco's TechConnect program.

Metro cell citywide Wi-Fi systems provide Wi-Fi hotspots, global roaming, MDU deployment, hospitality deployment, enterprise guest access, and metro area hot zones as part of the same seamless infrastructure. Systems are controlled from a central location for both community wireless networking as well as into the multiple dwelling unit (MDU) environment.

When the City of Chaska, Minnesota, decided to offer affordable broadband Internet service with speeds comparable to cable or DSL to its residents, how did they do it? They deployed a metro-scale Wi-Fi mesh network. Chaska’s MetroMesh network is composed of 250 MetroMesh routers mounted on lampposts covering 16 square miles of the city. Currently, this network serves more than 2,000 subscribers. Users send and receive email, download files, and stay connected. As the newest generation (3G Cellular) of cell phones enters the market with Wireless Voice-over-IP (Wireless VoIP) the ability to seamlessly roam between the cell phone network system and a local HotZone broadband access network will be a great productivity gain for mobile users.

The San Mateo, CA police department has a deployment of 20 MetroMesh routers to build a high-speed wireless broadband network and plans expansion of the Wi-Fi coverage area to encompass the entire 16 square miles within the city borders. The expansion will continue to take shape as funding becomes available. This eventual expansion will allow true broadband wireless access to patrol vehicles anywhere in the city of San Mateo.

In Tempe, Arizona, the Wi-Fi mesh infrastructure, manufactured by Strix Systems, will comprise 400 access points used for both backhaul and access. The Tempe Wi-Fi deployment uses mesh routers for citywide WiFi connectivity and WiMAX for longer range backhaul. The Tempe deployment is the latest in a series of municipal rollouts aimed, at least in part, to provide broadband competition when incumbents haven’t stepped up to the plate with creative new services. WAZTempe is the first and only provider of Metro-Scale, Outdoor WiFi service in Tempe. WAZ is deploying a Metro-Scale Mesh Network that will deliver 95% coverage to the City of Tempe in five phases.

The City of Tempe is the first major metropolitan area in the United States to deploy citywide wireless Internet access. The WAZTEMPE network, is currently the only provider of Metro-Scale WiFi in the state of Arizona, and operated by Neoreach Wireless, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of the MobilePro Corporation. NeoReach Wireless, Inc. provides city-wide multi-band Wi-Fi networks for municipal vehicles and personnel, including public safety employees as well as services for residences, retail businesses, schools, hotels and resorts, transportation operators and public events. The city of Tempe, Arizona, in partnership with WAZTEMPE, is currently deploying a 40-square-mile Wi-Fi network that will provide wireless broadband to residents, as well as a network for municipal and public safety employees.

WAZTEMPE is installing hundreds of access points throughout Tempe, in phases, with full deployment scheduled to be complete in the first quarter of 2006. The "mesh network" will cover the entire city allowing subscribers to utilize the Internet on laptops, cell phones, and PDAs anywhere within Tempe's borders.
